Third Quarter

Third Quarter is here! This month of February will also pass very quickly, so we will concentrate on the "Alumnae Reunion Project." This Reunion will take place on April 10 and our assignment is to create a movie with pictures of the students who attended Saint Basil Academy in the years ending in 0 and 5 (1940, 1945, 1950, 1955, etc.) We must also include pictures of the faculty at the time. Maybe create a collage with pictures of the faculty members of those years. Movie due: March 26 (latest!)

The Alumnae Reunion movie (group project) is this quarter's main project (it counts as two test grades). Those of you who don't work diligently and efficiently creating this project (and the other Third Quarter Exercises) won't get a good grade and won't be exempted from taking the Final Exam - especially if you don't complete all the Third Quarter requirements.

Project in Review:

You will work in groups of two. Each group will take care of one decade (e.g. "The 40's", "The 60's", etc.).

1. You will scan pictures from yearbooks and others that Mrs. Susan Bilotta (Director of Alumnae Relations) will give us. You can fix the resolution, brightness and contrast and imperfections of these pictures (as much as possible - you don't have to go overboard with this). If the picture is scratched or part of it is missing we can use the Stamp Tool or the Healing Brush Tool to fix it. I need you to be very organized when you scan these pictures. Please create folders for each year. These pictures have to be available for everyone in your group, in case some of you are absent. After scanning them, I need you to put them in the Digital Applications Folders so that I can move them to the iLife06 folder in the Server.

2. You will create a Title Slide for your movie with important events, and things that represent your group's year(s). You will create a Collage for your title slide using pictures of your era. You can check the samples in the server (under ALUMNAE REUNION). When finished, you will add this collage in iMovie (first slide). Note: The pictures in iMovie must be JPEG's. If you add a .psd document (Photoshop), your picture will look RED in iMovie.

Then, you'll organize the pictures to your liking and insert transitions and visual effects. The pictures should move fast (but not extremely fast). Take in consideration that the visual effects reduce the timing of your photo clips. The transitions should be set to about 0:14 (no more than one second). If you have any questions, do not hesitate to ask me. Your movies should be about 3 minutes long, since the Final Movie must be around 20 minutes.

3. You will also select music from those eras to include in your movies. When completed, the group movies will be converted to Full Quality QuickTime movies (best quality) and I will put all of them together to create the final project.

4. You should also add some titles and a few quotes from the yearbooks of your years in your iMovies. Get creative!

This project will be the biggest grade during this Third Quarter. Instead of giving you Tests and Quizzes, I will take in consideration the work you do for this project, your interest, your dedication and care. You should delegate responsibilities carefully between group members and accept responsibility for your final product. I will give you individual grades. Thanks for your understanding!

Other Third Quarter Requirements:

1. Another "Like Magritte" Exercise (or "Like Dali" or other) - if you didn't do Exercise No. 12 (Second Quarter), you must do it and do one more. If you did this exercise, you will create another one, get creative; look at samples of pictures (Magritte's or Dali's painting, or painting of any other artist). Get ideas and come up with an interesting composition. Make sure your images have good resolution.

2. Magazine Exercise - you will create a magazine cover. You can use a picture of yourself or a picture of your favorite singer, actor, actress, etc. You will create the cover yourself, don't just copy the whole cover. You will create the background, add the magazine's name, titles, UPC code, etc. Follow the instructions in the Server in the 3rdQ Exercises' folder ("Magazine Exercise").

3. You will complete a few more Photoshop Exercises. Mrs. Feld will let you know which ones. It all depends on how we're doing with time. The Movie will be our first priority.

This week (January 11 - 15) you can work on the Photoshop "Poster Exercise" that is part of your Midterm Exam. I know this exercise, if well done, will require more time than the time slotted for the Digital Applications Midterm. Please check the "Midterm 2010" Folder in iLife06 in the Server. Read the instructions carefully and feel free to ask questions to Mrs. Feld. You will also find the Review Puzzles in there. You can work on this "Poster Exercise" during this week and complete the 12 Second Quarter Exercises. I must be able to find these in the Server (your Digital Applications Folder) under Public. Thanks for your cooperation!

Reminder: the movie (iMovie) "Story of My Life" is part of the Second Quarter Class Work and it must be in QuickTime format. If I don't find this movie in your Digital Applications folder in the Server I have to give you and "F" in this project (I don't want to do that!)

January 2010

HAPPY NEW YEAR 2010! It's hard to believe we're already in 2010... I wish you all the best!

This month you will continue learning new techniques in Photoshop. You will learn how to use other Tools from the Toolbox, like the Pen Tool, the Stamp Tool and the Eyedropper Tool, and review the other tools already learned in class (Move Tool, Rectangular and Elliptical Marquee Tools, Eraser Tool, Crop Tool, Healing Brush Tool, etc.) You will also learn how to create a "Clipping Mask" (check the Adobe Photoshop CS3 Revealed textbook - Lesson 6, pages 7-26 - 7-29). A"clipping mask" or "clipping group" is a group of two or more contiguous layers that are linked for the purpose of masking. Below is an example of a clipping mask.

We will also review for the Midterm Exam. Yes, there's a Digital Applications Midterm (and a Digital Applications Final Exam for those students with an Overall Average -all quarters- of less than a B+). If your Total Average is B+ or higher you will be exempt from the Final. I suggest that you review your tests and quizzes of the First and Second Quarters.

Remember: you must complete all the 12 Second Quarter exercises before January 15, 2010. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask Mrs. Feld.
