Lesson 5 - iMovie

Before we do the textbook exercise "Sgraffito Technique" Movie, page 158, I need you to create a small slideshow/movie with pictures of your choice. By now, you should have the three iPhoto books (in PDF form) in the Server (in the Digital Apps folder under your name). Please do have a separate folder "DA First Quarter" there so that I can find your work to grade more easily. I really appreciate this.

Practice changing the timing on your clips, adding titles, adding transitions, adding music, and trimming it down, adding special effects, etc. When completed (your slideshow/movie) you must convert this iMovie into a QuickTime movie and put it in your folder in the Server (check below for instructions). DO NOT PUT THE iMOVIE IN THE SERVER - JUST THE QUICKTIME MOVIE PLEASE. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask Mrs, Feld.

To convert to QuickTime: while your iMovie is open, go to Share > select QuickTime and click Share. Right now we are compressing for a CD-ROM. You also have the option of selecting "Full Quality" for more important projects (so that the movie/slideshow is saved with much better quality).

Reminder: when you create movie/slideshows using iMovie, you usually delete some pictures or text, etc. It's a good idea to get into the habit of emptying the Trash. To do that, just click the small area with the little trash can on the bottom right of your iMovie Interface (window) and then click Empty Trash. After that you can click Empty Trash and Save Project and your iMovie will be saved. It's important to do this so that your movie doesn't take so much room in your computer, the more trash you have the bigger the size of your iMovie.

Once you complete your first iMovie of your choice, go to page 158 in your iLife Textbook and start the Sgraffito Technique movie/slideshow. Also, please connect to the Server, go to iLife06 and go to iLifeLesson05. There you will find the Sgraffito Script mentioned on page 174 and a sample of how your finished product should look like. Please drag both onto your desktop. When you start entering titles on this iMovie, please also enter your name under "Scratching your Designs" on the first clip. I want to make sure that you put the right QuickTime Movie in the Server, and it's also good practice. ASK QUESTIONS!

This iMovie, "Sgraffito Technique" will count as a Test. I will also give you a handout about iMovie on Thursday, Sept. 30th. We will have a Test on October 14th, about the iMovie Application (study from your notes and hand-outs). Please copy the Lesson Review at the end of the chapter, pages 190 and 191. You will also study the Hand-Outs Mrs. Feld will give you and answer the questions on the Review for Test Paper. To answer some of these questions, Connect to the Server, go to iLife06 and find the folder iMovieHD06, drag onto your desktop the PDF File (not the Word Document) and check pages 35 - 37.

After you complete the "Sgraffito Technique" iMovie you will start working on "The Story of My Life" Project. Please ask Mrs. Feld for the instructions and Rubric. Depending on how we're doing with time (I'm flexible) we may be able to finish this project before the end of the First Quarter. Right now I have a due date of October 28th, 2010. We'll see if it's possible to meet this deadline. I don't want you to rush too much, I prefer if you spend the necessary time on this project, so that it can be of great quality! Start bringing Baby Pictures (or other pictures of yourself, your family and friends). We will scan these pictures for this movie.

Lesson 4 - Creating a Book

Hopefully by now your notes are complete, with the information you typed in class, and the information in the DA Blog. Check the previous entry below. If you have any questions, feel free to ask Mrs. Feld.

Once you complete all the required assignments (6 slideshows and a Smart Album), you will continue with Lesson 4, page 115. You will learn how to create a book, first using the pictures from the "Cool Pieces Album" and then using pictures of your choice. The computers with new versions work a little differently, so please let me know if you need assistance.

Follow the instructions carefully. Don't worry if you see a little yellow triangle on your pictures; that just means that the pictures don't have very good resolution, check page 133. You can change the page design (layout) of that particular page to improve it. If the triangles remain - they won't show up in your PDF File. You will not print the book, but you will create a PDF file of your book. Once your folders are created in the Server under your Digital Applications Class, you can save your books there (so that I can grade them). To convert a book into a PDF file, you go to File > Print (or press Command-P) and on the bottom left of the Print Window select PDF > Save as PDF.

Also practice showing your book as a slideshow. You simply click the Slideshow Button and change the Settings and Music in the Slideshow Window. I need you to create two books of your choice with two different Themes, Hardcover and Large Size - 11" x 8 1/2". These books must have at least 10 pages, and both books must be converted to PDF files (check instructions above).

Once you understand how to create these books well and complete the book assignments we will move on to Lesson 5 and learn to create iMovies.

iPhoto - Lesson 2 and Lesson 3

By now you should know how to download pictures into iPhoto, how to create film rolls or titles (groups of pictures with titles), how to open and close these rolls, how to delete and rotate pictures and how to change the information in the "Information Pane" (Titles of Film Rolls and Date). The name of the first roll you imported was changed from L2 Student roll 1 to Student roll 1, and the date was changed to Friday's date (Lesson 2).

Class Homework – for your iPhoto Notes:
Copy the following: The Command key is the "apple" key on the Mac Keyboard, and type the Tip on page 69 (practice this so you understand what they’re talking about).

Also, answer the following questions - you can work in groups of two to answer these:
1. Where are the “Sources” in the iPhoto Window? What’s in there?
2. What is an “album” in iPhoto? How do you create an album? Mention 3 ways.
3. How are iTunes and iPhoto similar? (Mention at least three similarities)
4. What happens to the photos when you import them in iPhoto (where do they end up)?
5. When you are importing pictures from a digital camera, how do you know iPhoto is ready to import them?
6. How are the Library photos organized in iPhoto?
7. What do you do to view your photos by “film rolls or titles”?
8. How do you open and close a roll or group of pictures?
9. Where is the roll label or title?
10. How can you change the roll name or title?
11. How do you delete unwanted pictures?
12. How do you rotate or reorient your photos?
13. How do you select consecutive multiple shots at once?
14. How do you select shots that aren't next to one another (non-consecutive)?

You will have to study these notes and questions for your First Test - September 23rd. Also review your notes on “What is Digital” and the iLife handout.

* If you complete the exercise and the class homework before other students, you can do the following practice: download pictures of your choice (one theme, ie. flowers) - from the Internet or from the Server (iLife 06 folder). Organize them all in one film roll or title. Change the name of the roll or title to the "theme name". Delete unwanted photos, rotate the ones that are not right side up.

Lesson 3

For this lesson you will import the following folders from iLife 06 (in the iLifeLesson03 folder): L3.Biz roll 1, L3.Biz roll 2, L3.Biz roll 3, and L3.Dad roll 1.

Follow the instructions carefully from pages 74 to 108. You will also copy the Lesson Review on page 109 in your iPhoto Notes.

Tip: you can always undo the last thing you did by pressing Command-Z or going to Edit > Undo.

Vocabulary & Things to Learn:
Album/s and how to create New Albums
How to reorder shots
How to select contiguous shots
How to select non-contiguous shots
How to add comments, keywords and ratings to your images
How to view the Information Pane (or Box)
How to create Smart Albums
How to crop photos
How to adjust and enhance the look of photos
How to remove red eyes
How to straightened crooked photos
How to create folders in your source column (to organize your sources)

When you complete the exercises in this lesson please go to page 137 (in Lesson 4) and create a slideshow for every album in your Source Column. You will also create a slideshow of your choice (with pictures of your choice - from the Server > iLife06 or from the Internet). If you want to first download some music to your iTunes, you can connect to the Server, go to iLife06 and select the MUSIC folder. Select music of your choice and drag into the iTunes icon or window. The open iPhoto. iPhoto will connect to your iTunes and you can use some of this music on your slideshows.

Also practice how to create simple Slideshows from all your film rolls. Make sure all the pictures are selected (by clicking the film roll's title) and then simply press the Slideshow button at the bottom of the iPhoto window. Select music of your choice (by clicking the Music button) and change the Settings so that the slideshow doesn't repeat over and over. Make sure the Automatic Ken Burns Effect is checked and leave 3 seconds as the Play time for each slide. You may select a different transition. Practice changing the transitions and playing your slideshow several times. I need to check that you completed all the assigned exercises before moving on to Lesson 4 (Creating a Book). I will give you a Class Assigment grade on Friday, Sept. 17th.

Thanks for your cooperation!

Welcome Digital Applications Class!

Welcome Class! I'm very excited about having smaller classes this year - we can learn better and I can help you more.

First you will learn generalities about Digital Technology (What is Digital?) and the iLife Suite of products (iLife applications): iTunes, iPhoto, iMovie, iDVD and GarageBand. You will learn to download, organize, edit, and share digital photos using iPhoto; while creating albums, books, and slide shows - you will use the iLife 06 Textbook. You will also learn: What are pixels? What are file formats? How can you use the iLife applications to manipulate digital media? What can you do with these programs? Be patient! You have to learn the essentials. The faster you learn the faster we can work on interesting projects and fun hands-on activities.

Then, you will start working with each iLife application more extensively, following exercises and learning how each one works and how we can integrate all of them when we are creating digital media projects.

The first program that you will learn is iPhoto. iPhoto is the photo software (check the iLife handout I gave you on September 9, 2010. iPhoto makes it easy to download, organize, edit, and share digital photos; allowing you to create your own Albums, Books, Slide Shows, Web pages and Movies. You can store and organize photos for use in your digital movies. iPhoto is organized much like iTunes (I know you're familiar with iTunes!); on the left side of the screen (window) are the "sources" - a Photo Library and a bunch of Albums. With iPhoto you can automatically import content from your digital camera - which is copied onto your hard disk and organized in your Library - and you can print photos. You can select music from iTunes to accompany a slide show (the program connects automatically to your playlist in iTunes.) iPhoto can play one song or an entire iTunes playlist to accompany a slide show. You can also add motion to your still photos in iPhoto using the "Ken Burns Effect."

Read the iLife handout - you will have to study this information and your notes on "What is Digital?" for a small quiz some time next week (I'll let you know the exact date soon).

You will learn to download, organize, edit, and share digital photos; you will be able to create your own albums, books, slide shows, web pages and movies. You can also store and organize photos for use in your digital movies (using iMovie). You will also learn to select music from iTunes to accompany a slide show and to create special sound and visual effects.

You will start with page 58 in the iLife 06 Textbook: "Getting familiar with iPhoto." Read pages 58 and 59 (skipping for now "Importing From a Camera") - please try to understand what you are reading; if you have any questions, please ask Mrs. Feld. Then, go to page 61 and read "Prepare for the Lesson." You can find the iPhoto application in the Finder under Applications (or on you dock). You will download the entire folder called L2.Student roll 1 into your open iPhoto window (or just drag it into the iPhoto icon on the dock). This folder is located in the Server in the iLife06 folder. iPhoto will automatically start importing the folder of photos. Continue reading the whole chapter to page 70 and follow the book instructions.

Copy the following questions and answers in your notes:

1. How do you import pictures into iPhoto from a folder on your computer? Just dragging the folder into the main iPhoto window.

2. Name two things you should do right after you import photos: Deleting bad images and rotating the remaining images so they're properly oriented.

If you complete the instructions in Lesson 2, you can move to Lesson 3, page 73 ("Organizing and Refining your Photos). Read and follow the instructions of the whole chapter, up to page 109. Also copy in your notes (type) the Lesson Review on that page - Questions and Answers.

Vocabulary:
Digital, Digital System, Digitize, Binary Numbers (or Binary Digits), Bit(s), Byte(s), Kilobyte(s), Megabyte(s), Gigabyte(s), iLife, iTunes, iPhoto, iMovie, iDVD, GarageBand.
